ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Jan. 28. A friendly cricket match was played at Tuamata Park on Thursday by teams chosen by Messrs Stewart and Bain. Thanks to the energies of Mr. 0. E. Hemingway, the Club has revived, and the future of cricket in the district promises well. A Fire Brigade team is to be seen practising at the Park every evening, and if practice count!) it should be.on the winning list in the Stratford competitions. Realising tho danger from people lighting fires in the bush at the backW the Park, the Council have just finished a small shelter and installed a gas ring and slot meter in the Park grounds. By placing a penny in the slot the customer receives eight feet of gas, which takes about twenty minutes to consume in the ring—ample time to boil a bdly full of water. The contrivance, besides ensuring safety, should prove a boon to the many people using the Park during the warm weather, and no doubt will be largely made use of. The late floods in the river have resulted in blocking up the intake of the town water supply, and on Sunday the people in the town were cut off for the best part of the day. On Thursday the Council staff gave the intake a thorough overhauling and cleaning. The wife of Mr. Chas. Gill, of Wilson's Garage, died on Wednesday, after a brief illness. The meat works are now in full swing and on 'Thursday a number of pigs will be put through. This is good new?, as the breakfast rasher has been getting rather scarce lately.
