WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Jan. 29. The Waitara bowling team, skipped by T. R. Ford, is doing splendidly at the Taranaki Tournament. Ave are anxiously awaiting the final results. , Miss K. Faull, who has been secretary to the Tikorangi Library for a number of years, has relinquished the position. She had faithfully carried out her duties during her long term of office. Her successor is Mr. H. Hine. | There is some talk of a steamer from Wellington picking up the running to this port. It is certain that the old trade could be got back if gone about in the right way. The river entrance at the present time is good, the recent fresh having scoured out the accumulated sand. On Wednesday evening a Waitara motorist tried to do "a movie picture act" at the Waitara Road railway crossing by nearly knocking the 5.25 p.m. train from Waitara off the line. This crossing is a most dangerous one, and it is time the railway authorities did something, otherwise a tragedy may occur at any time. Coming from Waitara it i» not so bad, as approaching trains can be seen, but from New Plymouth it is utterly impossible to see trains coming to or from Waitara. The motorist in this case was nearly to the crossing before he saw the engine. A tool head saved what might have been a fatality, the rider putting on all the brakes and pulling up the car within two yards of the engine.
