U.S. EXCHANGE RATE. New York, .Tan. 28. The sterling exchange rate Is 3dol. 5054 cent. SOUTHERN MABKETS. Christchurch, January 27. There has been a good deal of activity In Algerian oats during the past few days, partly due, doubtless, to the fear by growers of discoloration of the sample ou account of the reicent heavy rain. The demand continues strong from the North Island, a slackening in values at the end of last week being a.temporary nature. Business has been done at cjuntry stations at ss, 8d for good, bright seed. There are no new season's Gartons in, and the feeling is that prices will ease. The limit of merchants' offers Is about 4s 6d at country stations, and as there is a considerable quantity of the old season's Gartons about, this figure Is subject to reduction. Merchants are disinclined to do any forward business. Wheat prospects have been Improved by the recent rain, although reports indicate a much reduced yield on account of frosts and the season. Cocksfoot Is still In firm demand at a rather wide range of values. "" There Is a good deal of Indifferent quality about, which in an ordinary season ' would be difficult to market. However, with the comparative failure of the Peninsula crop, the inferior quality Is in demand at 9d and lOd per lb. Up to lsld is readily procurable for best. There is also a good demand for ryegrass, undressed bringing from 4s 6d to Ss, the varied quality also accounting for the wide range. LONDON MABKETS. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPOBT.
