At ithe inquest held at Manaia, on Monday, into the drowning of Alois Herman in the Kapuni river, which, runa through the centre of deceased's farm, it was stated that Herman, while helping his men to get some cows across the swollen river, was seen to fall off his horse in the centre of the stream, the body being caught about half a mile lower down the stream, life then heing extinct. A verdict of accidentally drowned was recorded, the jury commending Messrs Taylor and Brandt for their attempts at rescue.
