KING- COUNTRY -CASES. A MIDNIGHT CAPTURE. By Telegraph.*-Press Association. v Taumarunui, Last Nigit. There was another lengthy sitting of the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. E. M. Burton, S.M., when a number of sly grog cases came up for hearing. Thomas Brennan was convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment on a charge of keeping intoxicating liquor for sale, and on a charge of bringing liquor illegally into a proclaimed area ho was convicted and fined the full penalty of £SO, James Burch, also concerned in this. cape, was fined £SO on a charge of Keeping intoxicating liquor for sale, and was convicted and discharged on a charge of illegally bringing liquor into a proclaimed area.
The bringing of these men to jusiica was a particularly smart piece of work' on the part of Constable McCaJhun, a haul of ninety-six bottles of wbjixy being made. The constable hid himfelfj prior to the arrival of the sudnight express, behind one of the trucks opposite the station. After the arrival of the train the constable saw Brennan And Burch taking hampers containing whiffy from the blind side of one of the «k*. riages, placing them under a truck. Th«' constable appeared on the - scene and caught Burch. Brennan immediately decamped, but was apprehended in sight attire at a hotel.
Smaller fines were inflicted ini vtjtnr liquor cases. Two young men, changed! with aiding an unknown person to j»Ui liquor to them, were fined £2O cfßh/ Two others, charged with supplying jjquor to a native, were fined £2O each. 4!< Maori, charged with aiding a petwHttSn- i known to supply him with liquor, ftu fined £2O.
