PROFITS IN WOOL.
GOVEBjNMENTS LARGE RETURNS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 28, 2.25 p.m. London, Jan. 24. Mr. H. J. Mackinder (Coalition-Union-ist M.P. for Glasgow), at Bradford, denounced profiteering in wool. He declared the Government made over £16,000,000 profit on wool last year. Mr. Mackinder added that the Government paid Australia and New Zealand £64,500,000 for wool, which, when auctioned, fetched 100 per cent, above the prices for the previous twelve months, yet the Government had paid no rooTe. Since March the Government had sold 1,'450,000 bales. Mr. Mackinder instanced one firm's profits, which averaged £85,000 before the war, while their profit last year was £379,ooo.—Reuter Service.
