WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) January 27. Just when the Saturday half-holiday appeared almost to be an accomplished fact, at the last moment it seems to be as far oft' as ever. The borough representatives met on Monday evening to appoint the day, but there'was "nothing doing" except that, a lot of discussion ensued, which I am not at liberty to write albout owing to their going'into committee. The meeting was adjourned until Friday, to see what the neighboring boroughs r,re doing. Mr. Pigott, late of the Sumner electrical department, Christchurch, has been appointed engineer, to succeed Mr. Johnston, resigned.
A car load of trotting club officials were out on Monday evening with n view of fostering the sport. A committee was formed for that purpose. I understand that the'membership is increasing rapidly, and by the time the meeting takes place it'is expected to have. 250 members. Two outrigger crews have been in constant training for the last few weeks and are competing at Waiiganni next month. The members of one crew in particular are very fit and they are sanguine of success. The hat. is going the rounds towards paying the expense of their boats being sailed to Wangaiwi.
Several half-built concrete houses have been deserted by the builders, "no cement" being the cry. A big concrete meeting house for the Maoris is also waiting to be started.
