GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS. Chrlstchurch, Jan. 23. Business In grain and seed lines has been very limited, and speculative- operations are practically nil, merchants being indisposed to do business to any extent. High prices are ths principal cause of this, but generally there is a lack of definite opinion as to what future values will be. The consequence, therefore. Is very limited business. The spirit of Algerian oats that took place last week has eased as quickly as It arose, and quotations are now on an easier basis. From 5a id to 5s 3d at country stations is now the market quotation, with growers taking the initiative to do business. There has evidently been something to carry over in the matter of Garton oals, and these are now offering fairly freely at a reduction on rocent rates. Dp to 4s 7d is the limit offered for the new season's crop. Evidences are that there will be an easing in value. Cocksfoot Is still In good demand. An authoritative report from the Peninsula estimates the yield this year at from 50 to 60 per cent, below normal. It Is now ascertained that the pest has done some harm in various parts of the province, and the Improved prospects may not be realised after all. New barley is commencing to come in, and 7s per bushel at country stations Is offering. The yield Is as usual, and prices should maintain the present standard. North Island merchants, however, are disinclined to operate beyond Immediate requirements on present values. There is no new season's wheat yet forward, but It la reported to be satisfactory. There is no business yet In potatoes as far as farmers are concerned.
