TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. OPENED IX GLORIOUS WEATHER. FIRST DAY'S RESULTS. The fifteenth annual tournament held under the auspices of the Taranaki Bowling Centre, was opened in New Plymouth, yesterday in the most glorious weather. The recent rains have freshened up the grass, and the greens will probably become.very keen before the end of the section play is reached, provided there is a continuance of the opening day weather. The arrangements for the tourney have been made with good regard Xor every detail reflecting credit on the officials: Messrs J. D. Sole (president), A. K.' Smart, F. Jackson, F. J. Hill, and C. N. Johnson (executive), and A. T- Moore, secretary. Both greens at the West End were utilised, and despite the heavy rains of previous days the greens played splendidly, in fact to some of the visitors it was too lively, the Hawera rink (Hicks) losing all their games. The new Stratford Club (Avon) were represented by a rink skipped by the veteran, J. S. Rowe, and promise to have a say in the fraals.
Keen contests eventuated at all the greens, and in some cases the game was lost and won on the last bowl Great pains had been taken by those responsible for the greens, with the result that play was enjoyaJble. As usual, in howling tournaments, there were some surprises in the results of the play, and it is evident there will be a great contest in the closing stages of the tournament. A suitable welcome was extended to the visitors by local officials at each of the greens, prior to the commencement of play yesterday morning. Three rounds were played yesterday, of which details are as follow: — SECTION A.
