CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
WELLINGTON GAS DISPUTE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The hearing of a dispute initiated by the Wellington Gas Co., with its employees commenced at the Conciliation Council to-day. The men's representatives took up the position that while they were prepared to reach a settlement before the Commissioner, they would decline to go to (he Arbitration Court for the following reasons : -(l) That the Court, not "being conversant with the conditions, could not give a satisfactory award; (2) the men should have the final say ir. framing the conditions.
It was agreed that the representatives of the men should obtain full power to conclude an agreement, the men to return to normal conditions pending further negotiations. The company, on the other hand, agreed to reinstate seven men, including the President of the Union, who were dismissed yesterday for declining to work overtime:
The hearing was adjourned to 16th February.
