ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) * Jan. 25. The blaze at the Bos Factory on Thursday shows the necessity of keeping a man there during the mid-day hours, as the appliances for fire-fighting are ample to meet requirements. The company has recently purchased a new set of hydrants and hose, and if it had happened at any other time the outbreak would have been put out at once. The Borough Council met on Friday evening, the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Tayler) presiding. The statutory half-holiday was fixed for Thursday in accordance with the meeting held some time ago. The town clerk, Mr. Irwin, who is still unwell, was granted a further holiday of three weeks. The Mayor and Cr. Ballantyne were appointed delegates to attend the Counties Conference to be held here on Monday. A report from the Reserve Committee was received, but nothing can be done until the survey is completed and the engineer's report received.

In spite of wretched weather, the Foresters had a good attendance at their opening dance. Good music and floor promise to make these meetings a success and build up their working fund, as a lot remains to be done inside and around the building. " Mr. W. Clements is getting ready to start the Te Kiri sawmill, which formerly was run by Pavkes and Brooker. From what I can learn he intends to shift the plant up nearer the mountain and instal some new machinery, bringing it more up-to-date. A new hauler is here at the local foundry, and it will not be long now before a start is made. The weather the last few days has cheered up our farmer friends, and root crops are going at top. People who smoke are wondering how it is that now the price of tobacco has gone up that you can get almost every brand, where a week or two ago one had to take whatever offered..

The only way of getting sugar here on Saturday was to buy a box of fruit and secure sugar for jam-making.
