A violent storm has been raging all day in Stratford, and not till 5 p.m. did it show any signs of abatement. Heavy rain, accompanied by fierce, driving winds, fell continuously. Scarcely any country people were in town, and few townspeople ventured out of doors. Consequently the streets had a most deserted appearance, and business was almost at a standstill. The Patea river rose rapidly, and was in heavy flood during the afternoon. The storm was one of the worst that has visited Stratord for a considerable time. Mr. and Mrs. 0. L. Allan, of Toko, were entertained at a farewell social at the Coronation Hall on Friday evening, Mrs. Allan was presented by Mr. Gemhoefer, on behalf of the residents, with a silver tea and coffee service, Mr. Allan with an illuminated address, and Miss Allan with a silver trinket box. Reference was made to the high respect in which the family were held, and good wishes for their future were offered. A suitable reply was made by Mr. Allan, A good concert programme was contributed by Misses Maunsell and Phillips, and Messrs G. Sanne, P. Coe, P. Aitken, G. T. Walters, and T. Thompson. Mrs, Maunsell and Mr. Fox played the accompaniments. For the dance, music was provided by Messrs. C. H. Fox (piano), Lester Bros, (cornet and clarionet), and Vinsen (drums). A good supper was served. ' At the last meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board, it was decided to hold a street collection for the purpose of raiising funds with which to purchase an Xray plant for the hospital. It was first thought that the total cost of the plant when installed would be about £BOO, and the Board hopes to raise from the public £SOO, including the amount already in hand. February 21st has been fixed for the special effort, and it is hoped that ] the public will rise to the occasion, and that the best hopes of the Board will be realised. The idea of procuring an X-ray plant originated with the Rev, Roward, and, at his suggestion, collections were taken up in the various churches in connection with the peace celebrations to assist in carrying out the project. An order for the plant has already been cabled. Mr. R. H. White, draper, and the P.A.C., auctioneers, have purchased the freehold of their Broadway properties.
