THE DEVON STREET FIRE.

LIST OP INSURANCES. An examination of the Devon Street 'shop premises, in which a Are broke out about midnight on Friday, showed that very considerable damage had resulted. There appears to bo little doubt that the fire originated just inside the hack door of the kitchen of Mr. Young's confectionery premises, and spread from these into the back part of the shop until recently occupied by Messrs. J. jmd J. Auld. At the same time it found its way through to the upper storey and did considerable damage to the workroom of Mr. Alex. MacDiarmid, dentist. The lire also reached the office of Mr. Lysons (surveyor), though he Buffered mom from the effect of smoke and water than from fire. Miss Tuohy, toilet specialist, also suffered much from smoke and water. The front portion of the ground floor of the premises was not much affected by fire, though water and smoke caused a good deal of damage. It is impossible to say what the total loss will be. The insurances were as follow:—No--1 buildings (owned by Mrs. Douglas), £2,500 in the South British Office; Mr. Young's stocks, £l,lOO in the Phoenix office; Mr. MacDiarmid's stock, furniture and plant, £3OO in the United Ofli.v. Miss Tuohv's furniture, etc., ,£IOO in the Victoria Office; Mr. Lysons' office fittings, plans, etc., £2OO in the Royal Office.
