BOWLING.

TARANAKI CENTRE (ANNUAL TOURNAMENT. OPENS TO-DAY. The fifteenth annual tournament, under the auspices of the Taranaki Bowling Centre, opens in New Plymouth to-day, the town's greens being fully occupied for the purpose. Entries have been received from as far South as Wellington. In all 63 rinks hare entered, which is easily a record, and these have been divided into seven sections of nine rounds each. All games are to be 21 heads, and if there is a tie at that stage one extra bead will be played. All rinks having as many wins as the lowest section winner, or tie for section, will go into the semi-final. After the conclusion of section play the full two-life system will be applied to all teams remaining in. Each rink on being beaten twice drops out of the competition; play is to commence) nut i 9 Sunt ishaa-p each day. Gold medals will be awarded to the members of the winning rink and to the Tunnere-up, and the Taranaki Shield will be awarded to the leading Taranaki rink. A complimentary smoke concert will be tendered to visiting bowlers at the Kawaroa Bungalow to-morrow evening at 8 o'clock. To-day's play has been arranged as follow:

West End Green (No. I) Sections D. and E. Umpire and Recorder, Mr. F. Spurdle. West End Green (No. 2)—Section C. Umpire and Recorder, Mr. F- Jackson. New Plymouth Green—Sections A. and G. Umpire, and Recorder, Mr. A. K. Smart.

Fitzroy Green—Sections B. and F. Umpire and Recorder, Mr. J. D. Sole. Players are reminded that the executive has abandoned the idea of utilising the Inglewood green for the tournament, and instead has decided to make use of the second green at West End. The rounds, therefore, which have been set down on the official programme to be played at Inglewood will take place at West End.

A citizens' match will be plaved at the conclusion of 'the Sections'* plav, open to all rinks ineligible to play in the semi-final. Each rink must comprise not less than three players, who liave taken part in the tournament.' Post entries will close at 8 o'clock on Wednesday evening, the entrance fee beinff £l. Trophies will be awarded to the winners. Tournament rules govern the match, except that each section will find its own winner and semi-finals will be plaved on the sudilen death principle.
