WELLINGTON RACES. . . LAST DATS BESPITS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 24. The weather was decidedly unpropltlous for the last day of the Wellington races, steady rain falßng nearly all day. The course was very heavy. Considering the unpleasant conditions the' attendance was large. Tho totallsator handled £58,564 10s. Tor the meeting it handled £193,193, compared with £119,100 for two days last year. Results:— WALLACEVILLB WELTER.—2 Chaeronia. 1, 8 Mumble 2, 4 Starland 3. Also ran: 1 Black Hill, '5 Arch Lassie, 3 Prince Hal, 6 Bed Signal, 7 Ewilorer. Won by three lengths, ten lengths between second and third. Time, lmin. 33 l-ssec. MELROSE WELTER.—I Penury Rose 1, 4 Ermine 2, 2 Lingerie 3. Also ran: 9 Alteration, 5 Old Gold, 7 Paddington Green, 3 Demagogue, 3 Sonnlno, 6 Boyal Exchange. Won by a length, one and a quarter lengths between second and third. Time, lmin. 32 2-5 seconds. HOPEFUL STAKES.t-1 Demand 1, 7 Fortune Teller 2, 2 WeUdone 3. Also ran: 4 Wake, 8 Phio, 3La Pair, 5 Pente, 6 Celmisla. Won by a neck, two lengths between second and third. Time, lmin. 2 3-s»ee. WATERLOO STAKES.—I Surveyor 1, 2 Right and Left 2, 4 Trespass 3. Also ran: 5 Caricature. Caricature led Bight and Left into the straight, but over the last two furlongs Surveyor came on, winning by a head. Time, lmin. 14 l-saec. SUMMER HANDICAP.—I Amythas 1, 7 Borealla 2, 3 Bagdad 3. Also ran: 2 Acre, 6 Spanner, 5 Rose Wreath, 4 Bonnetter, 8 Battle Array. Borealls led down the back, but Amythas Joined him at the half-mile, and coming away, won by a length. Bagdad was two lengths oft. Time, lmin. 44 l-Ssec. CONSOLATION HANDICAP.—6 Bonnie Maid 1, 1 Royal Stag 2, 3 Punka 3. Also ran: 4 Snub, 9 Impediment. 5 Mascot, 2 Melee, 8 Rose Pink, 7 Paddington Green. Won by three lengths, four lengths between second and third. Time, 2min. 12 2-ssec. CUT HANDICAP.—3 Blndle 1, 1 Mlchaela 2, 280 Pvep 3. Also ran: 5 Chimera, 4 Matoha, 8 Astlnome. Aatinome was prominent early. Won by two lengths, a length between second and third. Time, lmin. 3 4-ssec, NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to Dally News.) Wellington, Jan. 24. The Wellington summer races were, concluded to-day in wet weather. Rain began to fall qvftnlghb and continued almost right throughout the day. The racing track was very heavy and by the time the last race was run it was badly cut up. The lawns In the vicinity of the totaliaators were churned into large mud puddles. favorites had a good day and at one stage their score was four not out. Amythas won the trinclpal handicap event very decisively. The open sprint fell to Btndle. In the Waterloo Stakes Surveyor conceded Right and Left 231b and a beating, but tho finish was the best of the day.

The day's programme was opened with the Wallaceville Weller, In Black Hill and Chaeronla were sent out favorites. The Trentfcam Ally got out very smartly and ran in front of the field to the turn, where shegame away and eventually won easily by tares' lengths from the little fancied Mumble. Eight lengths back came Starland and Black Hill together. Red Signal was last. Because the going was to his liking Penury Hose was made favorite in the Melrose Welter. Demagogue and Ermine also received .solid support. Paddlngton Green was unruly at the barrier and delayed the start a lot. When the tapes were released Ermine shot to the front. She was soon joined by Lingerie, and Demagogue and Old Gold were close handy. At the five furlong post Demagogue joined Ermine In the lead and Lingerie dropped in behind. Then Ermine and Demagogue were still In front as the field swept round the home bend,- but below the distance Penury Hose began to make ground, and revelling In the soft track, came away and won by three-quarters of a length from Ermine. Lingerie was a similar distance away third. Old Gold was fourth. Demagogue fifth., and Royal Exchange sixth. The New Plymouth pair, Alteration and Paddlngton Green, finished at the tail of the field. Paddlngton Green was left about four lengths at the start. The Hopeful Stakes was contested by a field of eight. Demand, who had run well on both previous days, was a good favorite, but there was plenty of money for Welldone. Fortune Teller began most quickly and led into the straight from Wake. Here Demand carnie through and cut down the field in great style. Fortune Teller kept going nicely and was only three-quarters of a length behind at the finish. Thret lengths further back camo Welldone, Celmlsla and La Pali In a line, and next to them Pente. Welldone got a bad run, but had no chance with the winner. Only four saddled up for the Waterloo Stakes, which was a match between Surveyor and Right .and Left. Caricature was the first to get to the front, and Trespass was soon at the tail of the field. Right and Left swung on to the course proper a little ahead' of Surveyor, but Gray, on the latter, was keeping well out In the better going. A great race for the distance ensued. The pair were neck and neck all the way, but In the last few strides Gray got Surveyor past in front and won by a head. Trespass was five lengths away third and Caricature well back last ¥ This was Gray's only win at the meeting. The big handicap of the day, the Summer Handicap, was run over a mile course and drew a field of eight. Amytha3 was fancied better than any of the others and on her second day's form there was every justification for her position on the machine. There I were over a thousand tickets on Acre, Bagdad land Bonnetter. The start was not a good one and Amythas was one of the last to leave the mark. Borealis was the first to show out, but as soon as the field settled down Hose Wreath moved forward. A furlong later Amythas, who had gone round the field, joined the leaders, and Battle Array mqved UP to the second division. Boreslis was first Into the straight, bugging the rails, while Amythas, i going nicely in the middle of the course, was gaining fast. Over the last furlong Amythas simply played with the field, and In th« finish he won comfortably by half a length. Bagdad was four lengths back third. Then came Bonnetter, Battle Array, Acre, Rose Wreath, and last of all, Spanner. Tills was the fourth successive victory for a favorite. Royal Stag was made a decided favorite In the Consolation Handicap and Sir Geo. Clifford's rep. ran a good race, but in the home he had no chancel with the Trentham mare, Bonnie Maid, who was little fancied. Paddlngton Green, who had started earlier In the day, was saddled up again. Impediment was the first to begin, but Rose Pink soon headed her off and she led the field for the greater part of the Journey. With half the distance covered Melee, Royal Stag and Punka were right up .behind the leaders, Royal Stag going easily. At the hnme turn Bonnie Maid shot out, and from there on won with the greatesl l ease. She passed the post four lengths ahead of the favorite, with Punka a poor third,, and Paddlngton Green fourth. The City Handicap, six furlongs, was run In a heavy Bhower. 80-Peep was In the lead as they camo Into the straight, with Mlchaela lying next. 80-Peep was going so well at the distance that she looked like winning. Mlclmela cut her down a few chains from the post, but Blndle acme very fast on the outside, and won by a length 80-Peep was : third and almost In line with her were Chimera and Astlnome. Over £IO,OOO was pooled on the last race the Kaltoke Handicap. Mustard Pot, who had won on the two previous days, was again heavily supported, and there was plenty of money for Nursing Sister, who had run well on tho track with Blndle, the winner of the previous, event. Heavy rain was falling when the horses lined up at the barrier and the colors were not easy to distinguish as the field swung on to the course proper.
