U.S. AND. PEACE.

COMPROMISE FURTHER AWAY. ATTITUDE OF THE REPUBLICANS. By Telegraph.—Press Aasn.—Copyright, Received Jan. 25,11 p.m. New York, Jan. 23. The Washington correspondent of the New' York Times states that an unforseen turn in affairs took place when several irreconcilable Republican Senators visited Senator H. C. Lodge (Leader of the Republicans) and pointed out to him that they represented a large number of Senators, who would vote for the utter rejection of the Treaty rather than accept any material changes in Senator Lodge's reservations. This, it is felt, may negative any compromise. Senator Shorinan, who is one of the irreconcilables, has stated that he will leave the Republican Party if there is to be any compromise on Senator Lodge's reservations.—Aus,-N.Z. Cable Assn. VIEWS OF MR. W. H. TAFT. Received Jan. 24, 2.45 p.m, Washington, Jan. 23. Mr. W. H. Taft is actively promoting Senatorial recognition in reference to the Peace Treaty. He points out that eighty Senators favor ratification, of whom forty .favor reservations Article Ten is the crux of the dispute. President Wilson believes it is fundamental, but Mr. Taft sees no reason why there should be a compromise in regard to Article Ten, in view of the fact that it is unlikely to be invoked, owing to the existence of Articles Sixteen and Seventeen.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Aasn.
