EPIDEMIC OF CRIME.
CONSTABLES WHO PLAY CARDS. SEVEN MEN DISMISSED. By Telegriph.—Press Assn.—Copyright, Received Jan. 23, 10.30 p.m. London, Jan. 20. General Sir Nevil Macready (Commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police), has issued an order dismissing seven West End constables, and sternly warning the whole Metropolitan police against slacknets and avoidance o£ duty, -which jrill he punished with extreme severity. The dismissed men were found playing c&rdi in a stable at night time, when increased vigilance was publicly demanded owing to the large number of unsolved burglaries and thefts. The dismissals and the warning have also attracted widespread attention owing to an epidemic of murders and other crimes and violent acts, which are being committed all over the country. No arrests have yet been made in connection with the murder of five women, two of whom were murdered within the past week.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
