Mr. A. S. Collins, deputy-chairman of the Wellington Coal Trades Commission, has come to New Plymouth on a health recruiting trip, in the hope that his health will benefit thereby. He har. been suffering from a severe nervous breakdown for the last six months. It is understood that Mr. C. E. Bevan Brown, who has been headmaster of the Cliristchurch Boys' High School for many years, has given twelve months' notice of his intention to resign. Mr. V. C. Davies, of Westviow, has left for Nelson, where he will report on the Buitability of a block of lands for fruit farming by soldiers. Afterwards he will attend a conference of nurserymen at Wellington, returning to New Plymouth about the end of the month. Mr. C. Currie, who was a member of the staff of the Bank of New South Wales at Inglewood about ten years ago, is at present filling' the position of acting-manager during. Mr. Esse's absence on holiday leave. E. E. Bridge, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Bridge, of Manaia, was (states the Witness) successful in passing matriculation, solicitors' general knowledge, and inedical preliminary. He ■is a student of Scots College, Wellington.
Master H. P. Trehey, of Jrenui, a son of ex-Sergeant Trehey, formerly of New Plymouth, has received advice that he has passed his matriculation, medical preliminary, and solicitors' general knowledge examinations. Master Trehey Is a student at St. Patrick's College, Wellington, The Rev. E. 0. Blamires and Mrs. Bla•mires, of Hamilton, expect to leave New ■Zealand on February 19th on a twelve months' holiday trip to America and England. During their absence Mr. Blamires' place at St. Paul's Church will be taken by the Rev. W. Smith, who recently returned to New Zealand after several years 011 active service. At the welcome home to Private A. Herbert at Otakeho recently, Messrs. C. and E. Burke and 11. J. Eaves spoke in appreciative terms of the splendid war services of the Herbert family, all three sons of eligible age having enlisted and done good work in the firing line. The speakers also congratulated Mr. and ■Mrs. Herbert on having their sons return strong and well.
A telegram 'from Timaru says the death occurred yesterday morning, at the age of 64, of Mr. Robert Guthrie, for many years prominent among the settlers of the MacKenzie Country as manager of sheep stations. He was a vigorous member of the County Council, and other local bodies. He was a native of Ayrshire. As a youth he was articled to law, but his health required an outdoor life, and he came to New Zealand in 1876.
The Hon. W. D. S- Mac Donald, the new leader of the Liberal Party, was boru in Victoria in 1802. Mr. Mac Donald came to New Zealand in ISS2, and has resided i:i the East Coast district practically "Vi'i since. He first entered Parliament m )!K:s, when he was elected to repre■o'.'l the Bay of Plenty district; he has iu-!<! liip seat ever since. For three years lie acted as junior Whip for the Ward party. When the Mackenzie Ministry came into power in 1912 Mr. Mac Donald accepted the portfolios of Public Works and Native Affaire. He was Minister for Mines and Agriculture in the National Government, and acted as leader of the Liberal Party during the various periods in which Sir Joseph Ward was absent from New Zealand. The appointment of Mr. J. D. Gray 89 secretary of the department of External Affairs was announced by the Minister in charge of the department, Sir James Allen, yesterday. Mr. Gray was for many years a member of the Hansard staff, but throughout the war period was secretary of the Recruiting Board, in which capacity he did valuable work. Later he became secretary of the Ministerial Repatriation Board, while for the past six to seven months' Samoan affairs.
