The Public Service Conference carried a resolution not to encourage or participate in any strike, and also not to participate in politics or identity itself with any political party.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Asan. AN UNPOPULAR APPOINTMENT. Brisbane, Jan. 22. A public meeting protested against Mr. Lennon's appointment as Vice-Gov-ernor, and decided to cable to the King asking for the withdrawal of his commission. DEFENCE IN AUSTRALASIA. Melbourne, Jan. 22. General Sir W. Birdwood, speaking at his welcome by the Minister, said that it would be the height of folly to rely on the League of Nations to ensure our defence. New Zealand and Australia must see eye to eye and work as one nation with one thought in matters of defence. He also advocated the closer union of India, New Zealand and Australia in defence matters.
