NOTES ON THE RACING (Special to Daily News.) .Wellington, Last Night. There was a great crowd at Trenthara to* day, Anniversary Day, for tho second day of the Wellington. Racing Club's summer meeting. The sura of £35,445. waa put through the machine, as against £63,950 10s on the second day last year for the two days of the current meeting. The sum registered is £134,629 for the two days. A year ago the amount was I £119,099 10s. As on the first day the racing was good and there were again good fin- ! Ishes in several of the events. 1 Araythas wiped out his Cup failure by scoring decisively in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap. The Demosthenes colt was sent out a pronounced favorite and ho never ! gave his supporters any anxiety. Going to i the front right at the staTt he remained there to the end. Oratress finished very well, but j she could make no impression on him. His 1 form yesterday leaves no doubt that he was , unlucky to be unplaced in the Cup. Tho I Tressidy cblt Trespass, who was recently brought over from Australia by Mr. W. R. I [Cembali,' won the Douro Cup, and that good I mare Michaela beat Surveyor nicely in the j Metropolitan Handicap. The Kelburn Plate : was reckoned to be a pood thing for Moorfowl, who carried over half the (money on the machine, but had it not been for an accident ; Moorfowl would have been beaten. Sllvey : Link had the measure of Moorfowl at the j half distance, when her saddle slipped back. 1 the mare began to buck, got rid of McFlynn, : and Moorfowl went on to win easily' from the ' only other two starlera. ' McFlynn got a i nasty fall but it Is understood that he is i uninjured. Prince Hal was sent out a hot favorite for the opening event, the Mangaroa Welter, but there was an even range of betting. Parorangl, one of the well fancied division got out smartly and led the field at a smart pace to the straight. Parorangi was still In front at the distance, where he was seriously challenged by Ralland. A good finish between the pair ensued, but Raliand got the verdict by the narrowest of margins. Chaeronla was a fair third, Santorlnl fourth, and Mumble fifth. The January Welter was a good betting race. Lingerie and Brachenfield were the best backed and both ran prominently. Lingerie was first out, but had not gone far when ahe was joined by Brackenfield and the pair raced together to the turn, with Hurry "Up, Demagogue, and Nightraider following. Brackenfield • took the lead as the field entered the straight, and in the run to the post was not headed. The Blenheim horse won by half a length, and Nightraider beat Old Gold on tho post for second. Demagogue was fourth. Right and Left, Demand and Gas Bag were evenly supported in the Fltzherbe'rt Handicap, and they finished in the places. Right and Left was first out, accompanied by Blackmail, end before the straight proper Was roached Gas Bag was showing up. Demand, who was not among the first to move, was gaining ground fast. Right and left stuck it to the finish and won by half a length, though his weight was telling at tho end. Gas Bag just beat Demand for second. . Blackmail was fourth and Celmlsla fifth. The field for the Kelburn Plate was reduced to four, and of these Moorfowl was backed at odds on. The field got away well and at the distance Moorfowl was In front, with Silver Link at her quarters. The boy on Moorfowl had just drawn me whip and the Chokebore mare's chances appeared to be gone when Silver Link's saddle slipped back and the mare bucked McPlynn off. Moorfowl won by three lengths from Spanner, with Astl- 1 nome well back third. But for the mishap Silver Link would have won. i

The big race of the day, the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, saw eight of the Cup horses saddled up. Amythas was made a big favorite on the strength of his run in the cup and Oratress, despite her weight, was backed heavily. Amythas was first to hit the front, and passing the stand. Red Ribbon and Bonnie Maid were close behind him, with Oratress weii back. At the mile post Bonnie Maid drew level with Amythas. This pair were still In the van at the seven furlongs post, and the field bunched somewhat. Five furlongs from home Amythas had a slight advantage of Bonnie Maid and a little later Oratress belli, a to Improve its position, but Armythas was ! amng belter than anything. Ho shook off Bonnie Maid In the straight, but Snub and Oratress came through from the back. Oratress ran a great finish and got within a length of Ajjoythas, who won with a little In hand. Snub was three lengths away third, Red Ribbon fourth, Marqueteur fifth, Melee | sixth, Mascot seventh and Bonnie Maid last. The Douro Cvip drew a handy looking field, of which Mi ,f ntun& was made favorite. Swanuoe River wan quickest to begin, but Matatane lny handy all tho way. Steepholm got away bndly and never had a chance. In the straight MftfiUano still led, but Mandrake and Tre&pasß cwuo at him. Mandrake failed to go on with li, but Trespass left the field and won very eacily by thise lengths. Active just beat Rorealift for second. Risingham was fourth mid Mandrake fifth. I Surveyor was backed as unbeatable In the I Metropolitan Handicap, in which Michaela's form of Tuesday made l her look a good bot. | Oray got the favorite away weli, but the others lost little or nothing at the barrier. Acre showed up alongside Surveyor at the ! turn, but was soon shaken off. Michacla put in her run at the distance and beat the favorite home by a length. 80-Peep was three lengths back third. Chimera fourth, Acre fifth, and Maioha last. Sweet Memory, who is reported to have contracted a cold, was withdrawn from the , Camp Handicap, and Santorlni also was scratched The public went heavily for the gqyd looking Mustard Pot, who wen decisively on Tuesday, but Arch Lassie, Prodigal, Uiissfulness and Asterina all carried over four figures. The field all gdt away evenly, but when they settled down ICinsom hit the front just inside the distance, Mustard Pot swept up on tlfe outside and won by a length. NOTES BY "MOTUHOA." (Special to Daily News.) Palmerston North, Last Night. Tho Foxton meeting openfcd In splendid weather and before a large attendance. The racing was first-class, but the winners were hard to pick. Ima ribbon continued her victorious career by winning the Cup handsomely, and Walmatoa had an equally decisive win. Taranakl horses shaped well, but did not have the best of luck. Hushab.vc, Chedda,r and Cordon were withdrawn front the Hack ilurciies, leaving ten runners. Coolpan, who was making his first appearance over sticks, was a hot favorite. Vigiio, who ran well at Marton, also had a good following. Tho fffeld was sent away on 6ven terms. Coolpan, Rlenzl and Vlgilo led over the first fence, but the former was steadied, and as they came into the straight Vlgilo, Applaud, Rienzl and Coolpan were leading. Tho pace, which had been alow, then quickened and Vigiio led Combustion and Goldstream along the back, Coolpan and Ahlka being beaten. Goldstream came fast three furlongs from home and won very easily from a rank outsider, Luke, who just beat Vlgilo and Combustion. Applaud covered a lot of ground and may do better to-unprrow. Some Boy and Hupana dropped out of the Hbnatangi Handicap, Paonui being made an even money favorite, with the three top weights next evenly backed. All were faced right way when the barrier lifted, but Guinea Gold refused to jump out. Nemaline at once led from Beloved and Paonui. turning for home tile order was the same, but Belle o' the Camp came fast. Nemaline held her own to the finish, winning cleverly from Bella o' the Camp and Beloved, who were in, line. Glentour was fourth. Paonui could not gallop in the sandy going. [ Jean Laddo and Carrael Arch were absentees ! from tile Cup. Moutoa lvanova was entrusted with one-third of tho totalisator Invest- | ments and Ladoguer anil Perfect Day were the nest best backed. Perfect Day was still in front along the back, but I taarlbbon had displaced Moutoa lvanova I Perfect Day was tired at the home bend and came back on Moutoa lvanova. Imaribbon passed Perfect. Day on the outside and won all put from Moutoa lvanova, with Ladoguer, who Was also unlucky, close up third, followed by Multaine and Perfect Day. - Scratchlngs reduced the field for the Maiden U eighteen, and punters bet very warily. -Smberlne and Warning were the only ones seriously supported. Warning delayed the start for some time, but eventually the big Held went off in a line. Otauru Kid led Ambenne, Missland and Achlllion along the back nothing else having n chance. Otauru Kid was tired inside tile distance, leaving Amberine to come on and win easily. Missland was a good third. Then came Achillion and Simon, warning and Kaplti had every chance, but the pace was too solid in the early stages for them. Simon and Vagranceplece declined their engagements in the Awahou Hack Welter, ten going to the post. Marble Bar challenged (he leader at the <llstance, but import stayed on long enough to get the beat of a punishing finish by a neck from Marble Bar, who was badly Interfered with twice and should have won. Rajput was a neck further away, with Hupana and Stutter almost In line. Imaribban, Glorify, Slgnorelia and! Glentour were absentees from the Harrington Welter. Machree dnshed off in front and Gold Problem was tho most prominent of the others along the back. Machree lost her position at the bend and Gold Problem appeared to be winning easily, till Machree came again and almost caught him. SECOND BAT'S WEIGHTS. Foxton, Last Night.
