FIRE AT ELTHAM.
BOX COMPANY'S TIMBER DAMAGED About 12.30 yesterday Messrs C. Eade and J. Attrill, two employees of the Egmont Box Factory, noticed that a fire had broken out in some stacks of dry timber in the yards at the back of the mill. The alarm was immediately given, and the factory whistle sounded. The fire hose kept on the premises ivaa quickly brought into use, and later, the firebell having summoned the fire brigade, the new motor sped away to the scene of the conflagration. By this time the timber was well ablaze, and it was half an hour or more before the fire Ivas put out. Two lengths of hose were run out in addition to the Company's fire fighting apparatus, and water was played on the fire from both sides and on top, while many willing assistants removed the undamaged and charred timber. By 1.30 p.m. all danger wa9 averted. It is estimated that some 5000 feet of valuable timber lias been damaged or destroyed. This is insured (on an average basis) in the Sun Office. There were many conjectures' regarding what "might have been," but fortunately prompt action and propitious conditions confined the damage to the extent stated.—Argus.
