A RECORD TWICE BEATEN. NOTES ON THE CUT. (Special to Dally News.) Wellington, Last Night, At the Wellington trotting meeting to-day the great event, of the day was the attempts of Cathedral Chimes and Author Dillon to lower the Australian mile grass record of 2mln 11 3-ssec. A purse of lOOsovs. was offered by the Club. Great Interest was taken in the efforts of the two crack performers. Author DITIon went first. He was driven by his trainer, B. Jarden, and paced by the galloper, Rakaia, who -had the well-known (ockey J. Olsen in the saddle. Author Dillon went beautifully all through and got to the end of the two miles In 2min. Bsec, thus breaking the record by 3 3-ssec. Author Dillon is by Harold Dillon-Authoress. Applause greeted the record breaker on his return to the enclosure.
Cathedral Chimes, driven by' J. Pryce jnr.. was paced by Evening Chimes, who was driven by J. Bry«e snr., and galloped the journey. Cathedral Chimes struck himself during his preliminary and in the end he may have affected his chance a little. He got to the Judge's box in 2min. lOsec, which Is also better than the previous record and a fine performance. The performance of Author Dillon was brllllant,.for he made his record on a small track tvhlch was dead after the heavy rains. On a big course, with the going fast; he would probably have run the two miles in about 2min. 4sec. The 2m!n Bsec he ran Is probably a world's grass record. The whole of the nine accepters were harnessed up for the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup. Partner, on the lOsec mark, was made a better favorite than Lochnagar. Partner and Lochnagar both broke at the start. Partner quickly recovered, but Lochnagar went back to last, and her chance was rained Fair Puritan took the lead, but passing the stand the first time the order was Partner, Fair Puritan, Blrdnood, and Emperor. Six furlongs from the start Blrdwood ran round the leaders and had just hit the front when he broke. As the field passed the stand the 3econd time Partner was still In front, followed by Our Girl and Emperor. Blrdwood began to Improve his position again a little la<er, but he again broke over the' last bit. Partner, Emperor and Our Girl had the race to themselves. Partner stayed on and beat Emperor by three lengths. Our Girl was a fair .third and the.next to finish wereJrlako Mako and Peter Mac. The race was run in the slow time of 4mln. 48 4-ssee.

(By "Moturoa.") Wellington second day. The Foxton meeting opens to-day. Marqueteur Is worth following at Trenthara. Perfect Day will find Ladoguer "hard" in the Poxton Cup. The Wellington Cup nnd Telegraph "double" was a beauty for the layers. Trespass is some good, and should be all the better for Tuesday's gallop. Master Moutoa imay prove too "rich" for most of the hurdlera at Poxton. Paoanul had a lot of bad luck at the holiday meetings, and his chance may come at Foxton. The sloppy going beat Arrowsmith on Tuesday, but look out the first time he strikes the going firm. Bagdad and Matatano are rare "mud larks," and they both returned the same short price at Trentham. As anticipated, Demand ran a great race In the Nursery Handicap, and returned a good second dividend. If Statuette and Trespass are saddled up for the Douro Cup they should both run prominently. Kapltl nnd Amberlne ran well at Awapunl and Mai-ton, and the better of the pair will take some beating in the maiden at Foxton. The distance in the Awnhou Welter, 8% furlongs, should suit strong finishers like Moutoa Camp nnd Self Alliance. If Walmatao starts in the Anniversary Handicap auch another race as we saw at Marton should be served up. Odds on Walmatao I Marble Bnr nnd Import are the most discussed candidates In the Dash Handicap at Foxton, and the former should pay expenses at the meeting. If Imaribbon and Hyttus go to the post for (ho Herrlngton Welter they should monopolise the betting. Hjttus is a greatly improved prad. Entries for the Egmont R.C. summer meeting close at 8 p.m. on Friday.
