Thi) Christchurch Sun has been informed of a shipment of 159 tons of sugar at* riving in Christchurch only about 4lj tons were devoted to household congump* tion, the remainder being utilised industrial purposes, principally in con* nection with breweries and confectionery; works. Grocers interviewed alleged that) housewives were using all maimer of des« picable means in order to obtain sugar 1 , and certainly were not stopping at tel* ling untruths. People connected with the fruit business spoke of the glut oft the market of small fruit caused by tkej lack of sugar for jam-making pur? poses, and said apricots, peaches and; other large fruits would also be affect* ed if matters were not improved. Black! currants were selling at as low as 2J4 per lb., and peaches were from 25 to 3Q per cent, lower than they were at thii time last year. .
