STATE SANDWICHES.
DISGUSTED RAILWAY TRAVELLERS. The travelling reporter of the Wanganui Herald writes:—"Bill" Massey, as he is popularly called, as Minister for Railways, is in disgrace with the travelting public. He has increased the price of "eats" by 33 1-3 per cent.—that is, a cup of tea and a sandwich that used to cost fid has now been raised to Bd. It is contended by the authorities that the Government eating-houses have been yielding magnificent profits, and that thoro is no occasion for the advance. It seemed that when almost every section of trade was obliged to advance prices owing to increased production the Government could not resist the temptation either, so up went the price of a ham sandwich fro?n 20 to 4d. Insult has been added to injury by reason of the fact that, when the traveller asks for a sandwich, he gets let down with corned beei. One humorist twisted a ribbon of fat which formed part of the sandwich round his finger, and ; , viewing it with disdain, indignantly soliloquised thusly: "Arid Bill Massey got my vote on the promise of a square deal. Strike me pink, if he had done this before the election old Bill would have teen jostled stiff, I asked for ham, and got fat corned beef, which I hate like poison, and to make matters wbrso they charged me two brownies extra. No good, Bill, old boy! You're a gonner when we all get hold of your coattail."
