MATCHES IN A SHIP.
FIRE ON THE TE ANAU. THE SECOND OUTBREAK. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Jan. 20. A fire was discovered at 11.30 last night in No. 4 hold of the Union Company's steamer Te Anau which was berthed at the breakwater. The brigade pumped a large quantity of water into the hold and the flames were extinguished by 1 o'clock. Considerable damage was done to the cargo by water. The cause of the fire was from 24 cases of matches stowed in the hold, and, as this was contrary to the regulations, an inquiry will be held. This morning a gang of men was engaged to discharge the damaged cargo, but when they saw the condition of the cargo they decided not to commence work until given 5s per hour and 7s fid for overtime. Consequently the unloading did not proceed, and it is not known when the vessel will get a-way for Gisborne.
[Before leaving Lyttelton !ast week for Napier a fire occurred on the Te Anau under similar circumstances. Shortly before the intended time of departure, one of the engineers, whilst inspecting and oiling the tail-shaft, notticed unusual heat. The Union Company's permanent hands were put on, and unloaded a quantity of produce, and a small fire was located in No. 4 hold. A box of wax matches were found in the bottom of the hold, also a number of unignited matches lying about.
