A cable from Sydney announces the death of Mrs Fitzclarence Roberts, the musician, formerly well-known in New Zealand.
Mr. 11. G. Ohadiwick, of Hawera, wlio has been working in the Feilding district during the past year as milk tester for the Agricultural Department, lias (the Star states) received word of his permanent appointment to the position. Mr. Chadwick, who served with the 34th Reinforcements, was gassed in France. Mr. E. Harding, formerly of New Plymouth, but now a member of the firm of Messrs Bennett and Harding, auctioneers, of Patca, wielded the hammer for the first time at the weekly auction sale 011 Saturday afternoon, making a most successful debut (states the Press). Lieutenant-Colonel W"llie, formerly of New Plymouth, who has been P.M.O. of the Military Hospital at Trenthatn for a year past, is relinquishing those duties to become, for the time being, In-spector-General of Hospitals. His duties at Trenthatn are being taken up by Major Carbery, of Stratford. The death took place at Greymoutli last week of Lady Guinness, widow of the late Hon. Sir Arthur Guinness, who, at the time of his death, was Speaker of the House of Representatives. Lady Guinness was aged 73 years, and had been for some time in indifferent health.
Mr. 11. H. Allison, M.A., has been appointed rector of the Greymoutli District High School. Mr. Allison was for some years headmaster of the Kaikoura District High School, afterwards becoming headmaster at West Lyttelton. During the war he was group area officer In Marlborough. At one time ho was champion hurdler of New Zealand. Mr. .T, Edson has completed 50 years' service as a trustee of the Auckland Savings Bank. Reference to the fact was., made- at a meeting of the trustees of the institution, and on the motion of Mr. A. J. Entrician, vice-president, a resolution of congratulation was; passed. Mr. Edson returned thanks, and referred to the growth of the bank's business during the 50 years he had been associated with it. A New York cable announces the death of Professor Richard Maolfiurin, formerly Professor of Mathematics at Victoria University. Wellington Born in Scotland in 1870', Professor Maclanrin came out to New Zealand in Ws youth. He was educated at Cambridge and in Germany, and he came back to New Zealand to take up the position in Wellington in 1899.
