STRATFORD ELECTION.
PETITION AGAINST MR. MASTERS' RETURN. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. In connection with the Stratford election, a petition has been lodged with the returning officer (Mr T. Purcell) for presentation to Chief Justice, praying that the Supreme Court may declare the election of Mr Robert Masters as Member of Parliament for the Stratford district to be null and void. As far as can be gathered, certain irregularities are alleged to have taken place prior to and on election day. It is alleged that certain persons not entitled to vote were permitted to vote, and others entitled to vote were not allowed to do so. Up to the present, the Hon. J. B. Hine has been carrying on the work of the Department, as Minister for Internal Affairs, but his resignation as Minister has now been handed to the Premier. Mr Hine goes back to Wellington this week to clear up departmental matters before vacating efitas.
