RIGID PROHIBITION.
276 PER OENT BEER BANNED. AMERICAN COURT DECISION; Vancouver, Jan- 5. The brewers received a terrible shock when the United States Supreme Courc upheli the most vital sectic.i of the Volstecl Enforcement Law, and de/.-iared that 2.75 per ce.it. beer was illa^Hl
An iuroortant feature of th» "decision is that the Court upheld the action of Congress in declaring intoxicating, and preventing the sale of beverages containing one-half per cent., or more, alcohol. The decision is regarded as a definition of intoxicating liquor that will stand under constitutional prohibition, and because of the definite statement that Congress can prescribe just what makes a beverage intoxicating the decision appears to mean a bone-dry nation.
Likewise, it dissipates the hopes of the liquor interests for any tilting of the lid. Immense financial interests behind the brewers had hoped, to convert the old plants into "near beer'' factories.
