ROUNDING UP HIGHWAYMEN. SINN FEIN AND POLICE CO-OPERATfc By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 18, 5.5 p.m. London, Jan. 14. The secretary of the Sinn Fein executive in Cork has arranged patrols for the purpose of co-operating with the police on night duty, with a view to speedily dispersing gangs of robbers and highwaymen who are infesting the south of Ireland. A large force of police and soldiers in motor lorries made a five-mile circuit from Tralee, and arrested eleven young men in connection with the attack on Mr. Sullivan.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [Eight masked men at Tralee endeavored to force an entrance at the house of Mr, Slattery, solicitor, in which Mr. Sullivan, K.C., was dining. Many shots were fired, but the inmates were not injured.]
INTERESTING MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. SIR JOSEPH O'BYRNE'S DISMISSAL. Received Jan. 18, 11.40 p.m. London, Jan. 15. Unusual importance is attached to the Irish municipal elections to-day. It is anticipated Sinn Feiners will control the councils outside Ulster. The results of proportional representation are awaited with interest. There have been many hints that the dismissal of Sir Joseph Byrne, head of the Irish Constabulary, is due to defects in his administration. It is generally admitted that he is personally popular with the force. The only specific suggestion hitherto lias been the continued disappearance of ammunition, which Sir Joseph Byrne's department failed to prevent.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
