Messrs J. D. Mitchell, of Manaia, and Chas. Washer, of Inaha, have been elected life members of Egmont A. and P. Association.
The wedding took place at Patea on Wednesday of Mr. John Armstrong, of Marton, to Miss Catherine Iris Gilshnan, of Kakaramea. Taranaki soldiers returning on the N'avua, due at Auckland to-morrow, are: Privates J. H. Carlson (Eltham), J. A. Close (Stratford), and E. A. Lee (Stratford).
Lieutenant J. G. C. Wales, H.C., N.Z. Staff Corps, who has been appointed Adjutant of the 7th W.W.C. Regiment, was formerly farming at Hawera with Mr. W. A. Duckworth.
A cable from London says Lord Stanley (who, as Sir Albert Stanley was 1 resident of the Board of Trade) has taken the title of Baron Ashfield of Southwell.
A resident of Auckland for the last twenty years, and one who was well known in commercial circles, Mr. Frank Boswell Buckland, died recently. Deceased had been in ill-health for the past four months. He leaves a widow and two young children. A strong effort is to be made in the Bruce electorate to induce Sir Joseph Ward to reconsider his decision not to re-enter politics? at present, and to accept nomination for the seat in the event of Sir James Allen being appointed High Commissioner.
„ The following were successful in the Duntroon Entrance .Examination:—Mr. F. C. Gentry (Wellington), Mr. A. 1.. Young (Wellington), Mr. H. F. Allen (Nelson), and Mr. A. H. L. Sugdon (Christchurch). The successful candidates will leave for Australia at the end of the first week in February.
At Thursday's meeting of the Waimate West County Council, the resignation of the Engineer (Mr. A. J. Hansen) was received and accepted with regret. The chairman and councillors eulogised the excellent services of Mr. Hansen and regretted the necessity for his resignation.—Star.
Word was received by this week's English mail '(says the Wellington Post) that Mis Esther Fisher (daughter of Mr. F. M. B. Fisher), who recently arrived in London from New Zealand, where she gave several pianoforte recitals, lias been successful in passing the final examinations for admission to the Conservatoire in Parts. Only 11 Jrench candidates were admitted and four front outside, Miss Fisher being one of this fortunate quartet.
At Rarawa House, last evening, friends of Mr. and Mrs D, MacPherson foregathered to bid them farewell on the eve of their departure to take over the Masonic Hotel at Waitara, and, on behalf of old boarders and personal friends, a presentation was made of a silver tea rsrviee as a mark of the appreciation in which they we,re held, and good wishes of the company wore expressed for the future welfare of the recipients. A pleasant couple of hours were spent.
Mr. H. Urquhart, representative in Taranaki during the last ten years for Messrs Bing, Harris and Co., who is now removing to Wellington, where he has accepted an appointment as manager of one of the firm'a departments, was farewelled last night at the White Hart Hotel by a representative gathering of Commercial . travellers and representatives of business firms. Mr."J. Kennv, who is the oldest traveller on the road', presided, and made eulogistic reference' to the many good aualities of their guest, who was deservedly popular among the knights of the road, and on their behalf ho presented Mr. Urquhart with a case of pipes, at the same time wishing him every success in his new position. Several other _ travellers also spoke in a similar Btrain, and Mr. Urquhart responded. Occasion was also taken to introduce Mr. Halley. who succeeds Mr. l-rquhart as Taranaki representative of the firm.
