Mr. Ben Tillett, the well-known British Labor M.P., is reported to be seriously ill with blood poisoning . Dr. MacDiarmid, who has been on a visit to England and Scotland, was expected to reach Hawera last evening. Constable Clouster, of Opunake, is at present on holiday leave. During hia absence lie is being relieved by Constable D. J. O'Neill, of Rahotu. Mr. E. J. Wilson, M.A., B.Sc, of the Lniversity of Perth, W.A., has been appointed lecturer in modern languages to Victoria College. Mr. Wilson is a New /ealander, and was educated at Canterbury College. . Mr. A. E. Kernot, of Wellington, who » abroad and Mr. E. H.' Hiley, late General Manager of New Zealand Railways, who returned to England last year, have bwn elected Fellows of the "oyal Colonial Institute. Mr. R. H. Irwin, Town Clerk of Eltham, has (reports the Argus) been unwell for some time past, and his manv friends will regret to learn that his illness will probably incapacitate him for a turther three or four weeks. Mr George Scott, who for many years was the official assignee for a wide district around Palmerston North, celebrated his eightieth birthday on Wednesday. Mr. T. Hobson, of Levin, has been nominated for one of the highest offices in the Masonic Order in New Zealand, that of Grand Z of the Royal Arch Chapter. The installation will tako place at Napier at the end of the month. Mr. P. H. Graham, architect, of Gisborne, has been appointed housing expert under the Housing Act of last session. The appointment is for two years at a salary of £IOOO a year. Mr Graham will be in charge of the practical side of all housing work carried out by the Government.—Press Association. The two sons of Mr. R. J. Knuckcv, ol Kawhitiroa, who were injured in "a collision of a motor cycle and a gig near he Rawhitiroa School last week; are both doing well. The elder boy is out and about again, but the vounger Alf is still confined to his bed, though we' are pleased to state he is out of all danger.—Star. Mr. \V Wilson, 8.E., M.Sc, A.M.1.E.E., late of Canterbury and Auckland university colleges, and now of the Genera) Jilectric Company, Birmingham, England', has been elected chairman of the council of the Society of Technical Engineers at Birmingham The society includes trained members of the electric, mechanical and chemical sections of the engineering profession. The appointment is announced of Dr -U. S. Wylie, C.M.G., C.B.E FRCS to be Inspector of Hospitals under the lublic Health Department. Dr. Wvlie served for a long period during the war and after making a special studv of orthopaedic treatment in England returned to New Zealand to direct that branch of the work, which was bein* inaugurated under the Defence Department lor the benefit of returned men in the Dominion.
A, telegram from Christdmrch says Mr John P. Murphy, Deputy Commissioner or stamps, died yesterday after a few days illness. He joined the Stamps Department over 35 years ago in Wellington, where he was stationed for many years and where he was particularly well known.
