SALARIES ON THE RAILWAYS, By Telegraph.—rress Association. Dunedin, Jan. 14. The Railway Officers' Institute Conference to-day adopted a new salary schedule for presentation to the Wages Inquiry Board. This provides for substantial increases in all grades of the service. This is considered necessary In view of the increased cost of living. The question of claims for overtime, Sunday duty, and fixing definite working hours is now under discussion.

A SLY-GROG HAUL. "t Wellington, Jan. 14. The Taumarunui police got the biggest haul of whisky yet made in the King Country, by catching two men leaving by the midnight express last night, with 96 bottles in four hampers and a portmanteau. They left with the swag on the blind side of the train and they alleged that they had brought the whisky all the way from Wellington. The two men have been suspected by the police of landing whisky at fiaetihi, Ohakune and Taumarunui for some time and have been summoned on the present charge to appear in court on January 27.

LARGE FIRE AT TARADALE. Napier, Jan. 14. The Hawke's Bay Motor Company's branch stables at Taradale, the Tarftdale Hotel stables, Glenny's store-room and sheds, and a cottage owned by Mr. Paul Hawkins were totally destroyed by fire early this morning. A favorable change of wind at an opportune moment resulted in half tho township being saved, there being no water supply. The stables were insured for £IOOO in the Royal Exchange, Hawkins' cottage for £2OO, and the hotel stables for £4OO in the Norwich Union. Glenny was uninsured as far as the destroyed outbuildings are concerned. The latter also lost 60 cords of firewood, four tons of | hay, and a large quantity of bran, oats, I chaff, etc. The cause of the fire i 3 not known.

SHOP DESTROYED BY FIRE. Wellington, Jan. 14. The pattern. shop and contents at Cable's foundry at Kaiwarra. including many years' accumulations of pa.ttorns, were totally destroyed by fire early this morning. The cause of the fire is a mystery. The insurance on the building and contents was for £2OOO in the Queensland Office. A NEW TRAINING SHIP.

Wellington, Jan. 14. The Government has adopted the' 1 recommendation of Captain Hooper to take over the cruiser Sapphire for a training ship. The vessel is expected to arrive in New Zealand in two or three months.
