STRATFORD.

A meeting of the General Purposes Committee of the Borough Council was held on Monday evening. Present: Councillors Campbell Jackson, deputyMayor (in the chair), Newton, Lawson, Thomson, Stewart, Cameron, Walsh, Hunter, and Young. An application was received from tha members of the staff working on the streets for an increase of 2s per day iu wages.—Consideration wa3 deferred till the meeting in February. The secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department wrote stating that an officer of the Department would visit the district shortly in order that the question of a site for the local post office may be decided. In reply to Cr. Thomson, the deputyMayor said the citizens would be consulted on the question of site. Mr. A. Moon wrote asking the Counoil to complete the unfinished portion o£ Miranda Street, opposite his residence. —On the motion of Cr. Lawson, the matter was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. The Workß Committee recommended: fl) That the Education Board be advised that the Council could not accede to the request to divert the water from the technical school site to the Patea River along the Swansea Koad; (2) That the revision of salaries ana wages be deferred till the March meeting; (3) That Mr. Sturrock be recommended to have the metalling of Broadway South completed as early as passible, then tlo Broadway North, and, while the latter work is in progress, have Broadway South from Lear Street to Warwick Road tar-Bealed; (4) Thut Juliet Street No/th be given a fresh coat of tar and sand; (5) That the engineer's action in engaging Mr. Witt to remove rubbish in the meantime be approved.—Adopted. Mr. T. D. Sullivan, overseer, reported in detail on the work done during the month ana the report was adopted The electrical engineer (Mr. Holland) reported that owing to the coutinuc-d dry weather the plant at the hydro station had been shut down during the day for the month. Advantage had been taken of the shut down to overhaul both turbines and auxiliary gear. The plant at the Diesel station had had long daily runs and extra shifts had to be arranged. The plant had been overhauled during the holidays, and was running well.—Adopted.

The assistant Town Clerk was asker to write to the New Plymouth Borough Council and arrange for a visit by the Council to New Plymouth on Thursday week to discuss the question of electrical supply. Mr. K. Rdtis, abattoir manager, presented the following summary of stock slaughtered for the month of December, the figures for the corresponding mor.tii of last year being given in parenthesis: Covro 75 (65), heifers 18 (17' oxen 28 (nil), calves 3 (3), sheep 272 (204), lambs 251 (248), pigs 20 (19). The slaughtering fees amounted to ■ £7" 4s 3d as compared with £55 12s 3d for December last year. The report stated that Mr. Wilson had made a satisfactory job of the fencing, which should end their trouble? in this connection for a few years.—Adopted. The librarian (Miss M. Lavertv), reported that for the month, 1361 books hail been issued and 1295 returned. The odd books issued totalled 167, and those returned, 118. Five new subscribers had been enrolled, msfking the total 145. The fees collected for the month totalled £9 Is.—Adopted. The Borough inspector reported that during the month the Town Hall had been let seven times. Thirty-eight head of stock had been taken off the streets. There had been two convictions for 'riding bicycles at night without lights. —Adopted. The caretaker of the cemetery reported on work done, and stated that lie had found ft girl taking flowers from the town cemetery. He would like a warning issued against this kind of thing.—On the motion of Cr. Canicroit was decided to post notices in both cemeteries forbidding children under 12 years pf age front entering the cemeteries unless in the custody of theft" parents or guardians. The report was then adopted. On the motion of Cr. Lawson, it was decided to send a letter of thanks to the police for the admirable way in which traffic was controlled on racedays. Oth«r councillors spoke in the most complimentary terms of the way in which the traffic was dealt with.

HOSPITAL BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Hospital Board was held to-d.-iy. Present:—Messrs. C. D. Sole (chairman), Cameron, McKay, Finnertv, O'Neill, Hancock, Morrison, and Walter. Mr. A. C. Clarke, of New Plymouth, was appointed wardeman at a salary of £3 per week. A cable from Messrs. Newton and Wright, London, quoting £619 6s for an auxiliary X-ray apparatus, was read. Without a couch the cost would be £458, and with a medium sized generator an additional £7O would be charged.

The secretary said they were not informed whether the £OIO 5s included freight. The chairman moved that Saturday, February 21, be set aside as a day for collecting furtda for the X-ray plant, and that the whole of the Board members be a committee, with the town members and the secretary as an executive, to wake arrangements. They would have to raise about £4OO, and the Government subsidy would make up the balance. He thought the total cost of the plant when installed would be £BOO at the outside. The secretary said they had £l2O on hand already. The motion was carried. On the motion of Mr. O'Neill, seconded by Mr. Finnerty, it was decided to ask Dr. Leatham to cable an order for a complete plant, including couch, immediately. The Salvation Army, Wellington, wrote, thanking the Board for a donation of £2 2s for Christmas chqpr at the Children's Home.—Received.

The North Canterbury Board wrote, asking what system was adopted at Stratford in regard to the admission of patients to the Stratford Hospital, and what restrictions there were regarding the comparatively well-to-do person who could afford to pay for treatment elsewhere.

The chairman held that any perßon, irrespective of means, had a right to use the public hospital in preference to private treatment. The hospital should be open to rich and poor alike. Cr. The Department notified that Tuesday, March 23, had been fixed as the date for the Hospital Conference.—Delegate to be appointed at the February meeting. ./Mrs. L. A. Wilson forwarded £1 towards the patients' Christmas cheer fund.—Received with thanks. The District Health Officer notified that Mr. F. G. Coleman would carry out the duties of inspector during' six months' leave of absence by Mr. Gray.— Received.

The matron, iu her report, thanked the Board for the Christmas cheer. Sister Turner had joined the nursing staff on December 11th, Nurse Burgess was on annual leave.—Received.

The Health Inspector reported that, for the month ending January 12th, four cases of diphtheria had been notified, two In the Borough and two in the County. There had been sixteen cases of influenza, and one of pneumonia.—Received.

A financial statement dealing with the period from April Ist to December 31st j was presented as follows:—Receipts: Cash in Bank on April Ist, £729 9s; I local bodies, £1157 5s 6d; donations, £177 Iss 4d; Government subsidy, £llO2 Ss lOd; patients, £066 6s lid; back debts recovered, £6 18s; sundries, £SO 18s.—Total, £3461 9s 7d. Payments: Provisions, £4Ol 12s Cd; surgery dispensary, £ll7 9s 2d; grounds, £l7l 6s 2d; renewal of furniture account, £sl. Is lid; repair buildings, £l9 lis Id; fuel and lighting,. £241*138 Id; establishment laundries, £l2l 8s 9d; salaries, £940 Gs sd; administration, £182; District Nurse, £l9 4s 8d; public health, £lls Is lOd; sundries, £45 17s 6d; charitable aid, £470 lis lOd; other items, £lB3 7s 7d.—Total, £3OBO 12s 4d. The secretary said they had a balance in hand of £5Ol, and the chairman remarked that the position was most satisfactory. The report was adopted. The chairman reported that the building operations were progressing satisfactorily. GENERAL. A bullock on Mr. R. H. Phillips' farm, Huiroa, died recently as a result of swallowing a piece of rubber tubing.

Mr. F. Ranford, chairman of directora for the Stratford Dairy Company, left by yesterday morning's train for Wellington, to attend the Producers' Conference.
