INGLEWOOD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) January 8. The annual Boy Scouts' championship athletic meeting will take- place at the recreation grounds on the 2flth inst. Arrangements are well in hand, and this year's event promises to eclipse those of pat>t years. Colonel Cosgrove, head of the scout movement, in New Zealand, accompanied by his daughter, will pay a visit to Inglewood for the occasion. It is expected that scout troops from all parts of the province will compete. A strong contingent from Southern Taranaki, under Commander Buckeridge, will take part. Messrs C. O'Carroll and A. Gamlhi are attending to the trophies, which will be worth competing for. Scoutmaster Humphrey and his officers, assisted by the citizens' committee, have set themselves out to make a big day of it, and it is to be hoped their efforts will be crowned with success.
The local team of bowlers, consisting' of W. Henry, McLnggnn, G. Morton and F. Spurdlc (skip.), put up a fine performance at the Wariganui tournament, winning five panics out of seven played, and registered the only defeat of the Ponsonby team, who eventually won the tourney.
Mr. Alex Leslie, a prominent Inglcwood bowler, is seriously ill at his home in Inglewood.
A nasty rumor was circulated around the town here on election night, which unset a good many people. It was io the effect that someone had slashed the tyres of Mr. Masters' motor-car to pieces. Constable Longboltom immediately got to work, and after investigating the matter and inspecting the ear, made a statement that the tyre was simply punctured, and that their'was no indication to give rise to the rumor.
The holidays passed off quietly here. There being no form of public "attraction for stay-at-homes, the mail train conveyed a large number of citizens to other parts. There was a general exodus from here on race days. Many attended the sports on the' sands at New Plymouth, and several families were in camp there for the holidays.
