ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent). January 6. Heavy and welcome rain fell all day Sunday and Monday morning till about 10 o'clock. Then it was flue again, and along came a froat in the evening, but so far I Lave not noticed much damage done by it.

Looking from the hills to-day, one could everywhere see either hay being cut or harvested. The district for miles seemed busy. The whole district is looking better for the recent change in the weather-.

Mr. J. Johns is back from Masterton, He says that he had no luck at the sports meeting. Helping others put him out of - the running. The local Fire Brigade met last night, and gave their new motor a spin. At the meeting held afterwards Secretary Hinch was appointed delegate to the Stratford conference and Superintendent Nuttall to the big meeting to be held at Hastings next month. Fireman H. Rogers was presented with the medal won at the late sports meeting. A man made a statement that took iny fancy. He said: "Labor is composed to-day of three classes: young men who won't work hard, old men, who would work hard but can't, and some ex-sol-diers who don't want to work. The result is 'go slow.'" There seems to be something in > this when one hears of the money some of the young fellows are receiving.

One man here wh6 was in the navy received in back pay and gratuity a sum of over £3OO, and the Main Body men are getting a tidy sum, with the result that many of them are independent of work for the time being. The extension to the meat works is just about finished and the machinery is being installed. The contractor is about to start on the building of another new room.

Other new buildings are going up. Mr. D. Neea is putting up a residence at Chislehurst of part concrete and part timber.

Two more Eltham boys returned home last night, namely, Privates H. Turner and C. Peacock. Nearly all tho local boys are back now.
