DEMOBILISING the doctors. Speaking in Dimedm about the conjectures concerning possible and" accomplished changes in the military medical service, Sir James Allen *aid:— ''The.idea that Bvigndier-Ceneml McGavin's services as <lirector-.<reneral of services are to be partly military and partly civil is quite wro'm*. His work is entirely military at present, Imt wo cannot expect to be able to hold him very long. He is desirous of going back to civii life, and we know that" is in view. So nlfo with Br. Be is anxious to return to civil practice as soon as lie can be spared, but he. will remain with us in his present position until the time comes when he can be relieved of duty. We are doing the best we can to meet the needs of the country, and at the same time consult the wishes of these and other professional gentlemen now occupying responsible positions in the Defence service, and to that end we are trying to arrange for them to resume their civil practice" .gradually. In some cases we hava arranged for half-time and half-pav, with that in view. We are endeavoring, as far as possible, to give all these gentlemen the opportunity to doff the uniform whenever convenient, havmg regard to the wants of the country. I should like the public to understand that when these medical men who have been serving under the Befence Department go hack to their civil practice, there"will be a duty on New Zealand generally to assist them in re-establishing civilly "
