THE CHESS TOURNAMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. C. In the thirteenth round of the Chess Congress Mason beat Ewen and thus won the championship. Anderson beat {Smith, Hicks beat Wild, and Lindsay beat Connell. RAILWAYMAN'S THEFTS. Christehurcb, Jan. 6, Henry Leonard Bradding, foreman at "B" railway goods shed, Christehurcli, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment by Mr. 'McCarthy, S.M., this morning, for the theft of a quantity of iron and timber. Evidence given showetV that the iron was taken from the goods shed by a carter to accused's place and that timber also was stolen. Accused gave the police a contradictory account of his possession. lie denied committing the theft and offered no evidence. The Magistrate said accused had committed a breach of trust, setting a ' example to the men under his charge. The case required more than a fine, so he inflicted a sentence of three months' imprisonment. Accused, on leaving the Court, again protested his innocence and announced that he intended to appeal.
NEW BISHOP OF DUNEDIN. Dunedin, Jan. (!. -4t St. Paul's Cathedral to-day the Venerable Archdeacon Tsaac Richards, M.A., was consecrated Bishop of Dunklin.
