The local branch of the Mine Workers' Union, however, instructed the miners not to participate in Jlie ballot, and they presented themselves for work. The ballot resulted:—3l9 votes against working with the German and 27 for.
A recent cable message stated that a week ago the miners employed at the Simmer Deep and Jupiter mines struck work, owing to the dismissal of a German, I a former internee and an old member of the Mine Workers' Union. The "Comrades of the Great War" took up the matter in the interests of unemployed former soldiers. The strike was settled by the management agreeing to the man's reinstatement. Following this COO officials and surface workers pledged themselves not to work after December 17 if this man was allowed underground. Hence a deadlock arose.
