HUIRANGI-BRIXTON.
ROLL OP HONOR UNVEILED. More than ordinary interest was attached on this occasion to the annuaj concert which was held at Huirangi on December I«th last, for opportunity was taken to unveil an Honors Board which bad betm placed in the hall as a memorial to those from the Huirangi-Brixton district who had taken part in the Groat War. The ceremony took place prior to the commencement of the concert programme, the hall being crowded, among the audience being a number of the returned boys and relatives of those who had made the supreme sacrifice. h\ the indisposition of Mr. J!*. Y. Andrews, chairman of the School Committee, Mr. P. H. E. Surrey presided, and after a few opening remarks called on Mr. Frank Atkim-on. the representative of North Taranaki on the War Relief Association, who had very kindly consented to perform the ceremony.
Mr. Atkinson said that it was fitting that the Board was placed on what was actually an original wall of the old number ■six blockhouse. I n speaking j n f ef! ]. ing terms of those whose nainos appeared as having been licilled in action lie quoted the following words:
"0 valiant hearts who to your elorv came J Through dust of conflict and through battle flame, Tranquil you lie your knightly virtue proved, Your memory hallowed in the land von loved."
Mr. Atkinson went on to say that he was associated with others in'trying to give effect to the wishes of the* people who had put up a considerable amount of money during the war, for the relief of our disabled soldiers and their dependents vlu needed assistance, but there was something beyond that to he pi" 10 ' j' f we as a P en P le WPro to hi'id our destiny we must become the premier white race of the Southern Pacific What our soldiers /ought for and won was fredom to fulfil that destinv unhampered by any laws foreign to old British traditions, and that if we as a people did not make the best use of our opportiiuif should not be doiug our duty by our soldiers.
Mr. Atkinson then unveiled the Honors Board by removing the Union Jack-, with which it. was draped, the audience simultaneously rising and singine the National Anthem.
The Honors Board, which is mounted on a solid oak frame of handsome design, is in the shape of an ebonv shield bearing in gold letters the words Huirangi-Brixton Roll of Honor, 1914-18 and containing the following names-' Killed m Action.—Riflmn.
