SAVED FROM DROWNING.

BEMAKKABLE ACHIEVEMENT. Three bathers were seen in serious trouble near the pavilion of the Sumner (Chl'ittohureh) Life-saving Club one day last, week. Some lads immediately gave an alarm on the pavilion bell, and rushed the life-saving reel to the waters edge. Fortunately the signal was heard by Mr R Mitchell, the captain of the Sumner Club. Mitchell rushed to the beach, divesting himself of his clothing on the way. He guvo some Instructions to an onlooker as to the management of the reel, fastened on the belt, and made out, into the surf.

Owing to the succession of breakers lie had some difficulty at first in locating the bathers in trouble, but'anotlioy bather assisted in directing him, unci ho then saw three men close together drifting t out into the bav.

With (he full drag of the line behind him Mitchell battled through the surf, and succeeded in seizing one of the men with Ms right arm. Later he caugh; hold of a second with his left, and a lucky wave, brought the third man close enough for him to clutch the line.
