SPORTS AT TIMARU. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, Thursday. The Caledonian Societies' two days' sports began to-day in fine, calm, but overcast weather. Features of the running were the performances by S. Coppin (Timaru) in the sprints, and G. Getson (CliristdiUrch) in the long runs, and the cycling of Joyce, a hew man, of Waiinate. Gisborno, Last Night. At the New Zealand athletic cycle and motor cycle championship meeting the results were as follow, all the events being New Zealand championships unless stated otherwise (one lap being equal to one mile and seventy-nine yards):—
MOTORING. ..N.Z. heavy weight championship, fifteen -laps.—P. Coleman (Palmerston North) I, G. Powell (Gisborne) 2, L. Mangham (Palmerston North) 3. The only starters. Won by 400 yards. Time, 14min. 48 1-5 see.
Poverty Bay light-weight championship.—R. Jones (Gisborne) 1. W. Davy (Gisborne) was disqualified. Davy came in first, but was disqualified on the ground of crossing while turning a corner. ..Tones' time was 6min. 30 2-s.see
