BOXING.

UREN DEFEATS CLABBY. Napier, January 1. -"At thei-Ifiiflicipal Theatre, Hastings, last night, Uren and Chubby met-in a 15.-round. contest for a purse, of. £SOO. Before the proceedings commenced the president. (Mr. H.. M.' Campbell) ..announced that the Hawke's Bay Boxing Association, were adding a further £6O to th'e" £4OO purse originally promised, .and that Mr. W. .ft. Stead iad that day agreed to donate £SO to the Bame object. The president added that the middle-weighf championship of Australasia was involved. The ringside weights were; Clabby list 21b., Uren lOst 91b. As the p'air faced the huge audjence the American appeared. Jo .have a substantial advantage in height, reach and weight, but the early rounds quickly demonstrated how superior science can minimise a handicap of this kind. Clabby is a master at in-fighting, but in Uren he met more than, his match on the I night, and the referee's decision at the ; points—met with general approval. For I every telling blow that Clabby sent home I in clinches, Uren landed two or three, I giving special attention to the left cheek 1 and ribs of his opponent. Clabby endenyoured on several occasions to use his length and speed to bring about a knockout, but the marvellous footwork of Uren enabled him to avoid every onslaught. Many dangerous-looking swings were within a hair's breadth of reaching their destniation, but Uren showed no concern, and when occasion offered retaliated with a lightning left. Although the contest was chiefly one of in-fighting there were occasional bursts of brilliant rallies in the open that aroused the unstinted applause of the audience. Both contestants were in the pink of condition, Uren in particular being superbly fit. From Btart to finish the fifteen rounds were cleanly fought, and with the exception that Clabby's face and rib 3 showed signs of punishment neither contestant appeared any the worse for the arduous experience. Prior to the big event a number of amateur bouts were | contested, with the following results:— J. Keeiian (Auckland), Bst. 131b., defeated G. Gunn (Hastings), Bst. 71b. A. Mudsen (Hastings) 9st 111b., defeated J. M'Kinley (Wellington), 9st. 121b. 11. Gray- (Takapau), lOst. 81b., defeated A. ] Havill (Ashhurst), lOst. In the absence I of Hume, who failed to pass the medical I

test.'B; JiTCleary, of Duriediii, boxed an exhibition, bout with T. Heeney, of Gisborne,.[_ Mr,. Tim Tracey, of Wellington, was referee. As, is usual -pith the Hawke'a Bay Boxing. Association, the ringside arrangements were very complete.
