COMPLETION OF RECOUNTS.
FINAL STRENGTH OF PARTIES.
The official counts in the electorates concerned have decided the foUr contests, the issues of which, owing to the smallness of the leading candidates' majority, were regarded as doubtful when the preliminary returns were published. The ! re-election of Mr. Brown for Napier, and of Mr. Sidey for Dunedin South, ha* been confirmed, as also has been the defeat of Major J. B. Hine, Minister for Internal Affairs, in Stratford, and of Mr. Talbot in Temuka. The strength of the parties in the new Parliament will be as follows ::- GOVERNMENT 45 OPPOSITION 20 LABOR 8 IND. LABOR 3 INDEPENDENTS ......... 4 Two of the Independents were counted in the last Parliament as members of the Government and Opposition Parties respectively. The complete return shows that the i party representation of 19 districts has been changed. In addition two of the retiring members were re-elected as Independents. The Government won the three new, seats in the North Island—Roskill, Rotorua, and Eangitikei—and won seven seats previously held by members of the Opposition Party—Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa, Kaiapoi, Temuka, Waitaki, Wallace, alSd- Awarua. ./ The Opposition won three seats'previously held by Government supporters —Stratford, Nelson, and Wttkatipu—and one previously held by a Labor member—WeTlingtoft South. The Labor Party won five s'lats pVfivrorrsly -held by Opposition members— Auckland Central, Auckland West, Buller, Avon, and Christchurch South—and one previously held by an Independent Labor member —Lynn. A Moderate Labor candidate won a seat previously held by a member of tlte official Labor Party.
The representatives in the last Parliament of the three South Island electorates extinguished by the revision of boundaries, were candidates for adjoining district*. ■ ■ Mr. W. .T. Dickie (Ojvposition), the retiring -member for Selwyn, was defeated.in Ashburton, and Mr R. Scott (Government) retiring member for Otago Central, was defeated in Wakatipu. „ Mr, H. E. Holland (Labor), who sat for GTey in the last Parliament, won the Buller seat previously held by the late Mr. Co'lvin. ftv, H. G*.
