The course and appointmenls are in good order, find a good class of horso is likely to bo seen out at tile meeting, The first race to-morrow starts at noon, and on Friday proceedings will commence at 12.15. Thn winner of any flat, race after declaration of weights wl.'l carry Tibs penalty, and for every additional race a further penafry or Tllis., or, if he thinks fit, the handlcapper may re-handlcap iho winner of any race afler declaration of weights. The winner of any , hurdle raco after the declaration of weights will carry ltllhs, penalty: and for two or more races 17lbs penally, or the handicapper may re-handicap any winner. Form lias been pretty well exposed at New Plymouth, Ellerslie and Awaptmi, and there should be some fairly warm favorites saddled up at 'Stratford on Thursday. The Cup will' see Marqueteur, who ran fourth in the Mana; wat.u Cup, and Pretty Bobby, who was unfortunate lo lose at New Plymouth, in strong demand. The Douglas Handicap may lie between F.sthonia and Simonides. Inali Is engaged, but 11.10 may be 100 unuch for her. In the minor evenls Te Ton, Khartoum, Esniont Park (who is improving with racing). Tha followinc horses have been scratched for nil engagements at Marton: Arrowsmlth, Maioha, Dribble, and Statuette. Oratress should be very hard to beat in Uio Marton Cup, and in the Railway Handicap Waimatoa and Coolpau promise to bo well Bupportcd. Hautawa, Paoanul, Saiinu, War Ktar, Rcparoa, and Arrowfleld aTe all nicely treated in the "smalls." There is a good deal of sickness urevaleut amongst horses nt present. (Jang Awa' and several others developed Influenza al Awajiuni, and could not run. Arrowsmith was attacked with a severe form of colic, Signoreila was aj»» on tb ■* sick list, and could no', start at New Plj-iouth. The writer noticed several runners discharging: mucous from the nostrils, and trainors would be well advised to keep their horses well away from horses evidently developing 'flu. A lot of the "hoads" went' down heavily over an alleged joke which didn't turn out to be a joke at all at New Plymouth, and in consequenco the good old general public, which follows good horses on form alone, obtained a surprisingly good dividend. fho weather was hot and sultry at Awapunl on Monday, nnd anothpr great day's sport was provided. The going, which had been good nil through, was livened up by the previous gaHoplng, nnd times were fast all day. Maioha covered nine furlongs in 1.52 4-5, Canyon flvo furlongs In 1.1 2-5, Prince Hal seven furlongs in 1.28 3-5, and Sail Home won the Hurdles, U/ 2 miles, in 2.45 3-5. Winners were fairly well concealed, only three first favorites, win* ning, but racing was very interesting. The feature of the gathering was the poor horsemanship displayed, at least two races being fairly handed away through over-confidence. Arch Salute was a good favorite in the WhltmoTe Hack Handicap, and flattered his supporters until the concluding stages. Billy Bell rode ImaTlbbon a pretty race In behind thfe field, and joining Ralland In the run home, won cleverly by a head. Zeus let backers down badly In the Tiritea Hurdles, Hautawa broke up the field with a solid price, but Sail Home easily cut the leader down in the straight, and returned a fair price. Canyon (Wolawaj—Wairakau), was a hot favorite in the Juvenile Handicap, and dashing off in front, never looked liko getting beaten,. The runner-up,' Handy, is a promising sort. Arthur Oliver had the (mount on Maioha in the Liverpool Handicap, and after indulging Astinome and Moutoa Ivanova with the lead, joined Issue with Moutoa Ivanova, Demos, and Hose Queen in a great race home, narrow margins separating the quartette. Astinome was last. Tamaroa's good form on the previous days was evidently overlooked when it came to picking the Westbury Hack Handicap. They put in heavily on Nursing Sister, and Oliver had her in the van to the hnlf-distance, where Tamaroa and Sycoras passed her, the former winning easily. Nothing but Daytime would suit backers in the Claudeboyo Handicap, and the favorite won all the way. Teka mado a great effort to get up in the straight, but had to be content with second money. War Baby was the e'.ect of the public In the Christmas Welter. Pullea got out best, and looked like coming In alone, but tired badly, and Prince Hal nnd War Baby fopght It out, the former socrlng by a couple of lengths. Racing concluded with the Kawau Handicap, Waimatoa being an even money bet. Astinome and Waimatoa wero always prominent, and when the favorite appeared to be winning easily, McDonald stopped riding, and Llonskln dashed up and won on the post.
