SPORTING

T.J.C. CHRISTMAS MEETING, j THE CONCLUDING DAY. RECORD TOTALISAUOit INVESTMENTS. Pine weather prevailed for tho concluding day of the T.J.C. Christmas meeting on Saturday, though a strong, cool wind In the afternoon at times made matters rather unpjeasant. There was again a large attendance of people, who appeared to thoroughly enjoj the sport, which must be voted a success from' all points of view, and must have proved a great financial success for the club, which will welcome It gladly In view of the comprehensive scheme of improvements about to be undertaken. The racing was of a decidedly interesting nature, fields being good and finishes close, but the Judge (Mr J. Caimeron) never hesitated with the hoisting of his decisions, which gave universal satisfaction. Winners were well concealed, the first public choice not catching the Judge's eye first on a. single occasion, a tribute to the work of the handlcapper, Mr. H. Coyle. Paddlngton Green again annexed tha big event.

The totallsator staff under Mr. O'Callaghan again had « very busy day, the amount handled (£38,875), constituting a record for the club for one day. Whilst another club record was broken when £5582 10s was put through on the last race. The figures for the day would have shown a further Increase, but for the fact that Investors were unable to secure their dividends In time to Invest the money on the fol 7 > lowing race, there apparenly being too few pay out windows at the totallsator. This, however, will be provided for in the scheme of Improvements. The totallsator Investments for the two days were £67,011* 10s, as compared with £25,097 for the one day meeting last' Sear.

The meeting passed off without any mishap, j though the acting stipendiary steward, Mr.J Jewell had a busier day. having some Inquiries to deal wltlf. After the Fitzroy Hack an Inquiry was held into the alleged bumping of Mlmirl in the early stages of the race, and as the outcome, McCarten (rider of Army Service), Edgecombe (Ta&anganul), and Hunt (Mlmiri's rider), were all cautioned for careless riding. After the conclusion of the Summer Hack Handicap, Mr. D. J. Goodwin, owner of Egmont Park, asked for an inquiry, as he alleged that Egmont Park was struck twice by the rider of the winner during the run down the straight. McCormlck, rider of the winner, admitted striking Egmont Park, which he said ran In so close that he could not possibly aToid doing so when striking his own mount. The explanation was accepted, and no action was taken The stewards complimented Mr. Goodwin in bringing the matter forward A. Bound, rider of Flying Master in the Borough Handles* the prwlous day, was also cautioned for allowing a stranger to Interfere With his mount after it was in the starter's hand*.

The coqrse and Its appointments were In first-class condition, the lawn looking all the better for the previous day's rain, and presented a brilliant sight between the races.

lie Citizen's Band, under Bandmaster Mcleod, again submitted a splendid programme of music, which was listened to by an appreciative audience. As on the first day, Mr. E. P Webster, the secretary, and his had everything in first class order lust before th» horses were saddled up for the first event a flre occurred in a corner of the outside stand, and fanned by a strong wind the flames scon began to get a hold of tH® structure. The flre brigade was called, but Id tha meantime a bucket brigade, led by Constable CNeil, of Bahotu, succeeded In extinguishing the outbreak, very little damage fSSae done.
