JAPAN'S NAVY.
LARGE BUILDING PROGRAMME., SPENDING MORE THAN OTHER NATIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—rCopyrljht. Received Dec. 29, 1.5 a.m. Tokio, Dec. 2®. The naval estimates for 1920 are £30,000,000, which represents thirty per cent of the national revenue and is probably the largest amount any nation is spending on naval armaments in proportion to her national resources. The -programme provides for the construction of 207 vessels, including 4 battleships, 4 battle-cruisers, 82 destroyers, 70 submarines, to be completed in eight years at a cost of £76,000,000. The newspapers generally approve the plans, declaring that the Pacific mandates involve the guarding of the larger part of the Pacific. They also mention that Anglo-Americans contemplate a naval agreement,—Aug.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
