A COMPROMISE IN SIGHT.
WILL IT BE ACCEPTABLE? By Telscraph.—Press .Assn.—Copyright. Received Dec. 28, BM p.m. New York, Dec. 24. The Washington correspondent of the New York Sun says that Senator H. C. Lodge (Leader of the Republicans in the Senate, in a statement, said that a compromise was drawing near, "but it will be acceptable to the Republicans only if the reservations are retained, but I am not certain whether President Wilson will accept any compromise, save the ratification of the Treaty, without reservations."
The Washington correspondent of the New York Times states that it is reported that Republican mild reservationists and middle grounders have served an ultimatum on Senator Lodge stating that unless he expedites negotiations in connection with the Treaty they will personally negotiate with the Democrats.—Aus.-XZ. Cable Assn. A SUBSTITUTE TREATY. London, Dec. 24. Senator King announced that he had formulated a treaty which he would introduce into the Senate after the holidays. Senator Lodge's reservations with small changes formed the basis of new proposals. Senator Hitchcock stated that he had tried to dissuade Senator King from offering any compromise, on the ground that it should come from the mild reservationists of the Republican Party.
