ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) December 27. Christmas Eve, as anticipated, was a very busy time here. The streets were thronged with people, and the shops generally had a very busy time. Money -was plentiful, no doubt owing to the factories paying out a heavy bonus this week.

The pipe band played a varied programme in the main street, and incidentally sold a large number of tickets for their concert, while the Salvation Army were busy on the outskirts caroling. They also met with a ready response.

The sports meeting on Boxing Day was marred by bad weather, but in the evening the weather cleared, and the Athenaeum Hall was filled to hear the kilties' concert. A varied programme was presented, consisting of band selections (3), songs, dances, and a comic history oi Scotland, by Mr. Buist, of Hawera, which Was well received. Almost every item waa encored, and some of them had the honor of a double recalL The receipts totalled £35, which, after deducting expenses, should leave about | £3O clear.

To-day (Saturday) is a dead letter, all the shops being closed, and, outside of the railway ■service, nothing is doing.

Included in the latest summer goods which are now showing is an attractive range of sports coats in striped and plain effects, comprising all favorite color schemes. These cojits are extremely desirable on account of their high quality and moderate pricing. Will you see them?—Shipton's Corner, Eltham. Only a few more days to Christmas Eve, and busy ones at that. We advise you to shop early. You get a better selection and better attention.—Charles E. James, the best house in Stratford for presents. Open every evening till 9 o'clock.
