NORTHERN TERRITORY.
SEARCHING CROSS-EXAMINATION, Ry Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received December 25, 11.15 a.m. Sydney, Dec. l - .*. The Darwin Commission took evidence regarding the suggested misuse of Government. property brands and in the course of evidence Judge Bevan said the Administrators had great powers. Mr. Barratt (a solicitor) interjected: "Made him Czar of the North, in fact?" Judge Bevan replied that he did not admit that. Mr. Barratt added: "I put it to you that he was the greatest pirate king that ever came to Australia." Judge Ewing interposed: "That might be all right if you had a jury, Mr. Barratt. but with me it is like water off a duck's back." Judge Bevan denied Mr. Barratt's insinuation that at a dinner given to celebrate Mr. Gilruth's reappointment as Administrator in .1917 to the end of the war and six months after be expressed the hope that the war would continue, so as to allow Mr, Gilruth to remain Administrator- What lie did say was that, looking at the terms of . the appointment, one must be tempted to wish the war would last a long time.—Aus.N.Z.
