The, weather yesterday was decidedly unfavorable, rain continuing throughout the greater part of .the day. Neverthe less there was a record attendance at the opening day of the Taranaki Jockey Club's Christmas meeting, and a most successful gathering has to ze chronicled.

Sport,' on the whole, proved most enjoyable, the fields being large and the finishes close* whilst in the majority of Instances the winners were well concealed, favorites only getting home on two occasions. There were a couple of mishaps during the day, the favorite, Pretty Bobby, Trombone and Tiranga coming down during the running of thu Cup, and Self Alliance and Army Service coming down in the next race. Both accidents were due to the Tain having made the turf greasy at the corner. All the riders fortunately escaped injury.

The Christmas Handicap, the principal event at the gathering, was annexed by Mr. W. G. Emeny's Paddington Green. Mr. Jewell, acting-stipendiary steward, was present, but had no occasion to hold any enquiry during the day. Mr. A. Morse was at the barrier, and though he bad a number of. inexperienced horses, and in many cases inexperienced horsemen, to deal with, dispatched his fields well. Mr. J. Cameron, the judge, hoisted his decisions correctly and promptly.

The totalisator staff under Mr. W. P. O'Callaghan had a very busy time, handling £32,140 10s, as compared with £25,097 last year, which was a one-day meeting, an increase of £7049 10s. Mr. Gladstone was the Government representative.

As usual, the arrangements .for* the conduct of the meeting were splendid, though there was some delay in starting the first race, the result being that the last race was over half-an- hour late. Mr. E. P. Webster, secretary, had provided for every detail, being ably assisted by a courteous staff. Mr. J. Blewman had the course and ite appointments looking well. Despite the wea-

ther, the lawns were looking green, being relieved by numerous plots of varicolored flowera. Unfortunately, the weather prevented the fair sex from parading on the lawn, and this detracted from the brilliance of the gathering. The Citizens' Band, under Mr. F. W. G. McLeod, rendered a splendid programme of music. The catering in the hands of Mr. Wooller was up to his usual high standard, whilst the afternoon tea kiosk, under the control of Mrs May, had a very busy time, as also did the refreshment I booth, under the control of Mr. Whittle. The results are as follows:—-
